Hey Sam, I really like the site...:) I wanted to share some thoughts about Romans 2 with you.

Paul's view of God's judgment here displays a picture of God like a person giving another individual chance after chance.

"God is kind- not kindly in the sense of indulgent, a sleepy old uncle who doesn't care too much what people get up to- but kind in the sense of genuinely caring and understanding, and trying to find the best way forward for every single human being. God is depicted as patient, offering chance after chance. - N.T. Wright

People can reject God's love- part of the logic of love is that it can always be rejected but God is committed as the good and loving creator to putting the world to rights. Those who live in the dehumanizing ways mentioned in the previous passages are courting disaster.

Neither Greek nor Roman religion or philosophy had any doctrine of a final judgment. But it was central to Judaism, and Paul places it firmly against the ancient pagan world in this passage. There is a God who, as creator, is responsible for the world, and he will put it to rights. He will act with complete impartiality, as accords with strict justice.

Paul, as a Christian theologian, does not unsay any of the basic Jewish doctrine. There will indeed be a last judgment, and will accord with the totality of the life that each person has led.

Lastly, at times Christians have imagined that Paul's doctrine of 'justification by faith' means the abolition of a final judgment according to works, but Paul never says that. He can look the world in the face and speak of the justice of God. - N.T Wright

I guess it turned out a little longer. :)
